Josep Maria Nadal is Professor of the University of Girona. He has also served in the past as Chancellor of this institution. Together with Modest Prats, he is the author of a groundbreaking and still-ongoing Història de la llengua catalana. His research has pioneered the historical analysis of languages from the standpoint of their process of legitimation as cultural constructs. He has created and organized the renowned International Symposia entitled Problemes i Mètodes de la Història de la llengua. He co-directs (with Francesc Feliu) the research group entitled Història de la Llengua i Llengua Normativa within the Institut de Llengua i Cultura Catalanes (University of Girona). He is the director of ODELLEUM (Observatori de les Llengües d’Europa i de la Mediterrània), a member of ISIC-IVITRA, and a member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans since 2009.
