Bio

Eloi Grasset Morell has a Ph.D. from Paris IV – Sorbonne University, 2011). He is currently a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at University of California - Santa Barbara. In the recent past he has held positions at Harvard University and University of Barcelona. He graduated from the department of Iberian and Latin American Studies at Université de la Sorbonne and his dissertation Modernité et Changement de langue. Le passage du castillan au catalan dans l’oeuvre de Pere Gimferrer. Aspects critiques, théoriques et lexicométriques, is focused on the language change (Spanish/Catalan) that takes place in the poetic work of Pere Gimferrer. His thesis discusses whether this change of language necessarily implies a change of style in his works. He also carries out a computational stylometric analysis of the linguistic patterns in Pere Gimferrer’s work (considering both lexical and phrasal aspects).

 

The results of his research have been published in different books and indexed journals: (e.g. Necesitar Devenir Minoritario: sexualidad, territorio y escritura; Memòria i símptoma: ficció i subjecte dins l’espai autobiogràfic). Moreover, in his postdoctoral research, he opened up other research lines that have primarily focused on Film Studies and Comparative Literature. His works on these fields have been translated into several publications: (e.g. Fiction Traces: The Ideal Community and Historical Sabotage; “Je ne sais pas qui je suis”. L’identité indécidable et l’écriture du délire dans Les Mauvaises Pensées de Nina Bouraoui). His teaching focuses on the exploration of Modern and Contemporary Spain and he also has published widely on many aspects of Iberian cultures.  His current projects include bilingualism in literature with a focus on authors writing in a second language, autobiography and Digital Humanities.
